Diabetes Spotlight: Bruce Verchere, PhD—Human Islets and β-Cell Dysfunction

“The first time you look into a microscope is pretty amazing. Seeing that we are made of tiny, tiny bits that all work together as one organism,” Bruce Verchere says. He had initially been more interested in physics, but an undergraduate biology course at the University of British Columbia (UBC)—Vancouver piqued his interest in physiology. “We have evolved over thousands and thousands of years to become attuned to our surroundings. And yet, we still get disease. We are still susceptible to our environment,” he says. “As you learn more, you realize how much we don’t know.”
