In a recent issue of Diabetes, Liu et al. (1) report associations between corneal nerve abnormalities and diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The scale of the cohort, breadth of corneal phenotyping, and inclusion of inflammatory tear biomarker analyses are notable strengths. However, several methodological and conceptual concerns materially limit interpretation of the central conclusions.
