Response to Comments on Raineri et al. Memory Regulatory T Cells as a Biomarker of Early Type 1 Diabetes

We thank Petsiou et al. (1), Gootjes et al. (2), and Bruzzaniti et al. (3), in this issue of Diabetes, for their interest in our work (4) and for the opportunity to further discuss the interpretation of phenotypically defined regulatory T cell (Treg) populations in early type 1 diabetes (T1D). Although the three commentaries emphasize different aspects of our study, they raise largely overlapping concerns regarding 1) the identification of Tregs, 2) the definition of the memory compartment, 3) the absence of functional characterization, and 4) the interpretation of our findings of an early biomarker of T1D.
