Home to the headwaters of nine rivers, Algonquin Provincial Park contains thousands of lakes and hundreds of miles of streams, waterways that historically have played a crucial role in Ontario’s lumber industry. During her second year of undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario, Erin Mulvihill did a research project sampling benthic invertebrates, the larval stage of small aquatic animals like dragonflies, snails, and worms. “That was my first time doing formal research and the first step on my trajectory to becoming a scientist,” she says. “To think about sampling the outside world as a means of understanding it,” she says. “It was very natural for me.”
