In the age of peptides, Jennifer Estall often hears an iteration of the same joke: diabetes is cured now; your career is over. “Which isn’t true, of course,” she says. Still, like most good jokes, this one also points to a truth, namely, that Estall, earning her doctorate in the early 2000s just as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) drugs were being developed, began her career in the wake of the kind of scientific breakthrough most researchers pursue their entire lives. “It was inspiring to see that the slow progress of academic research can actually lead to something huge,” she says. “Twenty years of research can lead to something. I’ve seen it happen.”
