Through her parents, Dawn Davis was exposed to opposite ends of the medical field. Her mother worked and volunteered with community and health–related nonprofits. Her father was an engineer developing pacemakers and MRI machines. “I remember a prototype pacemaker at home, encased in liquid plastic,” Davis says, “and I was probably one of the first people to have a brain MRI.” But it was a high school biology class that cemented her interest. “I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. My school didn’t have a lot of resources, but my teacher let me set up my own little lab in the back of the classroom where I did DNA cloning,” she adds. “That was a great experience, to have the support of my teachers.”
