Growing up, Carmella Evans-Molina felt there were limited options for a girl in West Virginia coal country. She grew up in the shadow of Kopperston Mountain, living, until age 4, in a row house in an old coal camp—“rows and rows of houses that all looked the same,” she says—the vestige of a company town. “It was very remote. An hour’s drive over a really big mountain to the nearest mall,” Evans-Molina says. “I didn’t know many scientists, for example, and I had some doubt in what I could do.”
