2053-LB: Racial/Ethnic Distribution of People with Diabetes and Diabetes Center Staff—2024 T1D Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative (T1DX-QI) Survey Results

Introduction and Objective: The T1D Exchange Quality Improvement Collaborative (T1DX-QI), a network of diabetes centers, conducts an annual survey to assess patient demographics, clinic staffing, and learn about centers’ improvement efforts to care for people living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (PwT1D and PwT2D) and their families. Methods: The annual T1DX-QI survey was administered via Qualtrics from September to November 2024 to collect data from 2023. We invited 62 centers that provide care for PwT1D and PwT2D to participate. Results: Fifty-six centers (90%) responded to the survey – 38 pediatric and 18 adult centers – caring for a total of 91,964 PwT1D and 88,598 PwT2D in 2023. Centers reported a higher percentage of PwT2D than PwT1D identifying as a minoritized race/ethnicity, a trend more pronounced in pediatric centers where most reported over 50% of PwT2D identifying as minoritized race/ethnicity. Additionally, over 80% of centers had less than half of their staff identify as a minoritized race/ethnicity. Pediatric and adult center race/ethnicity distribution is summarized in Figure. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate a mismatch between race/ethnicity of staff members and the PwT1D and PwT2D they serve, particularly among PwT2D and within the pediatric population. Future QI efforts at participating centers should explore the impact of this mismatch on PwT1D and PwT2D, and their diabetes outcomes.
