Diabetes Spotlight: David J. Hodson, BVSc, PhD, FRCVS—Regulation of Insulin and Glucagon in Pancreatic Islet Biology

In the Pennines, a range of moorland hills in northern England, it rains for much of the year. “The grass grows very green, very long, and as a consequence, the cows produce a lot of milk,” David Hodson says. As a kid growing up in this farmland outside of Manchester, Hodson always saw the livestock veterinarians as possessing a certain stature. “They were like kings of the castle. They would come in and be such an important part of the farm,” he says. “So I never wanted to be a scientist. I wanted to wrestle large beasts.” He trained as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Bristol and has the scars to show for it. “You get booted by cattle, I’ve got a chunk of my arm missing where I got bit by a horse,” he says, “but nothing’s worse than the cat scratches.”
